Joining of multi-material structures using a versatile self-piercing riveting process

Abstract Due to the increasing use of multi-material constructions and resulting material incompatibilities, mechanical joining technologies are gaining in importance. The reasons for this variety possibilities as well high load-bearing capacities. However, currently rigid tooling systems cannot react changing boundary conditions, such changed sheet thicknesses or strength. For reason, a large number specialised processes have been developed expand range applications. Using versatile self-piercing riveting process, structures joined paper. In modified tool actuator technology is combined with multi-range capable auxiliary parts. capability rivets achieved by forming rivet head onto respective thickness part combination without creating set-up effort. joints investigated both experimentally on basis joint formation capacity tests means numerical simulation. It turned out that all examined could be manufactured according defined standards. capacities comparable those conventionally joints. some cases fails prematurely, which why lower energy absorptions obtained. maximum forces higher than conventional Especially case high-strength materials arranged die side, interlock low. addition, die-sided sheets requires deformation protrusion, leads an increase stress and, result, damage if head. negative influence excluded.
